September 4th 2012: The Sasakawa Peace Foundation Lecture

Dr. Khalil Hassan, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Japan attended the Sasakawa Peace Foundation’s lecture given by Mr. William Martin, former US Deputy Secretary of Energy on the theme of “Global Energy Trend and Developments” in Tokyo. Under Reagan administration, Mr. Martin also served as Special Assistant to the President and as Executive Secretary of the National Security Council. Recently he concluded ten years of Chairing the Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee of the Department of Energy. Dr. Martin discussed the issue of energy security in wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. At the lecture, Mr. Martin looked ahead to a world of 10 billion people by 2100 and asked the basic question, how the needs of human kind can be met. He described the need for a diversified energy mix to achieve clean and secure energy requirements, and looked at the responsibilities of advanced nations such as Japan and the United States to ensure global energy stability through advanced technologies that will be cleaner and more renewable than today’s mix.
